JATIMTIMES UB ) menjadi kampus hijau mulai diarahkan pada persoalan yang selama ini menjadi problem laten di lingkungan perguruan tinggi, yakni sampah plastik. Melalui kolaborasi dengan LyondellBasell atau LYB, kampus tersebut meluncurkan program Reverse Vending Machine yang tidak hanya berfokus pada pengumpulan sampah, tetapi juga mendorong perubahan budaya dan perilaku sivitas akademika terhadap pengelolaan plastik.
Program ini muncul di tengah meningkatnya sorotan terhadap persoalan limbah plastik yang terus membebani lingkungan. Kampus dengan lebih dari 70 ribu mahasiswa dinilai menjadi ruang strategis untuk membangun perubahan budaya sejak dini. President Commisioner PT LYB Asia Pasific, Rolf R. van Beeck, menilai perubahan menuju ekonomi sirkular tidak mungkin berjalan tanpa keterlibatan manusia dan generasi muda.
“Jika Anda ingin mengubah budaya, Anda harus memulainya dari generasi muda. Itulah mengapa Brawijaya adalah mitra yang sangat baik bagi kami, karena ukuran anggotanya yang luar biasa besar serta kualitas dari universitas itu sendiri,” ujarnya, di Rektorat UB, Selasa, (19/5/2026).

Menurutnya, mahasiswa saat ini merupakan pemimpin masa depan yang akan menentukan arah pengelolaan lingkungan ke depan. Ia menekankan pentingnya mengubah cara pandang terhadap plastik, bukan sebagai sampah, tetapi sebagai sumber daya bernilai ekonomi.
“Jika mereka memahami apa itu sirkularitas, jika mereka tidak melihat plastik sebagai sampah melainkan sebagai sumber daya yang berharga, mereka akan mengubah dunia. Mereka akan mengubah budaya di Indonesia, dan mereka akan menggerakkan ekonomi sirkular,” katanya.
Kepala UPT Green Campus UB, Prof. Suhartini , menjelaskan kerja sama antara UB dan LYB difokuskan pada introduksi teknologi Reverse Vending Machine yang terintegrasi dengan Internet of Things (IoT) untuk mendukung digitalisasi pemilahan sampah plastik. Mesin tersebut dirancang agar botol plastik dipisahkan otomatis dengan tutupnya sehingga memudahkan proses daur ulang.
“Budaya pemilahan juga akan menjadi salah satu bahan campaign yang dikelola oleh UPT UB Green Campus ,” ujar Suhartini.
Ia menambahkan, kerja sama tersebut tidak berhenti pada penyediaan alat, tetapi juga melibatkan penguatan kolaborasi akademisi dan industri melalui workshop, guest lecture, kuliah tamu, hingga kampanye publik terkait pemilahan sampah plastik. Dalam pelaksanaannya, UB juga menggandeng komunitas I Literless untuk memperluas media kampanye dan edukasi.
Menurut Suhartini, target konkret program ini adalah menjadikan UB sebagai kampus berkelanjutan dengan sistem pengelolaan plastik yang memiliki nilai tambah ekonomi.
“Botol plastik bisa terpilah kemudian bisa termanfaatkan menjadi produk lain yang lebih memiliki nilai ekonomi, baik itu dalam bentuk by products ataupun juga biofuels ,” katanya.
Rektor UB Prof. Widodo menyebut persoalan sampah plastik menjadi salah satu tantangan utama dalam upaya mewujudkan green campus. Ia menilai pengelolaan sampah tidak akan berhasil tanpa kesadaran kolektif seluruh warga kampus.
“Untuk mengelola sampah plastik ini tidak mudah karena membutuhkan kesadaran dari semua warga kampus,” ujar Widodo.
Karena itu, UB memilih menggandeng industri untuk menghadirkan sistem yang tidak hanya bersifat edukatif, tetapi juga memberi fasilitas nyata bagi mahasiswa agar mau terlibat secara sukarela dalam pengumpulan sampah plastik.

“Ini adalah bagian dari edukasi dan sekaligus aksi nyata dari Universitas Brawijaya untuk menjaga lingkungan,” katanya.
Widodo menjelaskan kolaborasi dijalankan menggunakan skema matching fund, di mana pihak LYB dan UB sama-sama memberikan pendanaan dengan nilai setara. Selain dukungan dana, LYB juga mentransfer pengetahuan dan teknologi terkait pengelolaan polimer dan plastik berbasis industri.
Ia menegaskan kerja sama tersebut dirancang menjadi program jangka panjang. Setelah tahap pengumpulan sampah, mahasiswa, dosen, dan peneliti UB akan dilibatkan dalam pengembangan riset pengolahan lanjutan agar limbah plastik dapat diproses kembali menjadi produk bernilai ekonomis.
“Jadi, ini kolaborasi yang sangat komprehensif antara akademisi dan industri,” ujarnya.
Senior Manager LYB Asia Pasific sekaligus President Director LYB Indonesia, Rakhma Febriani, mengatakan besarnya komunitas mahasiswa UB menjadi alasan utama kampus tersebut dipilih sebagai mitra strategis dalam proyek keberlanjutan ini.
“Untuk kalau kita mengadakan suatu perubahan atau suatu hal yang baru, ini adalah sangat bagus sekali kita mulai dengan Universitas Brawijaya yang punya mahasiswa segini banyaknya,” katanya.
Ia menjelaskan dukungan LYB tidak hanya berupa pendanaan awal melalui skema matching fund, tetapi juga transfer pengetahuan kepada mahasiswa, profesor, dosen, dan pimpinan fakultas agar program bisa berkembang hingga tahap pengolahan dan pemanfaatan kembali plastik di sektor industri.
“Ini program berkelanjutan. Jadi nanti ada workshop juga, kemudian kami juga memberikan knowledge yang kita punya kepada mahasiswa, dan juga diskusi bersama para profesor, dosen, dekan semuanya,” pungkasnya.
