Saat dikonfirmasi, Handi tak menampik kabar tersebut. ia juga mengaku bahwa proses tersebut telah ia lalui selama dua bulan terakhir.
Bahkan, ia menyebut bahwa saat ini tengah berada di Kota Semarang untuk mengikuti tahapan selanjutnya.
"Hari ini saya di Semarang, saya dijadwalkan menjalani tahap akhir berupa wawancara langsung dengan Wali Kota Semarang," ujar Handi melalui sambungan telepon, Kamis (23/4/2026).
Langkah profesional ini diambil Handi setelah mendapatkan informasi mengenai lowongan jabatan pimpinan tinggi melalui aplikasi MyASN milik BKN yang terbuka secara nasional.
"Saya melihat ada peluang tantangan baru di luar lingkungan Jawa Timur, sekaligus untuk memperluas jejaring profesional di tingkat regional yang lebih luas," tuturnya.
​Dalam rangkaian seleksi tersebut, Handi berhasil menembus posisi tiga besar setelah melewati berbagai tahapan asesmen yang ketat. Gagasan utama yang ia tawarkan di hadapan tim penguji berkaitan dengan strategi penguatan fiskal daerah.

"Fokus yang saya paparkan adalah strategi peningkatan Pendapatan Asli Daerah (PAD) guna mengantisipasi tren penurunan Transfer ke Daerah (TKD) yang kini dialami hampir seluruh pemerintah daerah," jelasnya.
Kendati demikian, ia memastikan bahwa proses yang ia jalani sekarang tidak mengganggu kinerjanya di jajaran Pemkot Malang.
Ia melaporkan bahwa kinerja lembaga yang dipimpinnya tetap menunjukkan tren positif dengan capaian surplus pada triwulan pertama tahun 2026.
"Alhamdulillah, kinerja tetap stabil. Bahkan untuk sektor pajak reklame di awal triwulan kedua ini sudah menyentuh target 100 persen," pungkasnya sembari menegaskan komitmennya untuk tetap fokus menuntaskan target di Malang hingga ada keputusan resmi dari Kota Semarang.
